Blocked Drain Clearance in Southampton

NOW Drainage was called out to a property in Southampton after the customer experienced problems with a blocked drainage system.

The blockage was caused by a combination of heavy limescale build-up and what appeared to be dental floss caught within the drain. Standard flow had been restricted, so our team used CCTV drain survey equipment to identify exactly what was happening inside the pipework before using high-pressure water jetting to clear the blockage and restore the drainage system.

The Problem – Blocked Drains in Southampton

When we arrived, the drainage system was not flowing correctly and waste had backed up inside the inspection chamber.

The blockage appeared to be caused by a build-up of limescale inside the pipework, combined with material that looked like dental floss. These types of blockages can be difficult to clear because they can cling to the inside of the drain and gradually collect more debris over time.

CCTV Drain Cameras Used to Find the Blockage

Rather than guessing where the problem was, we used our CCTV drain camera to inspect the pipework internally.

The CCTV footage allowed us to see exactly where the blockage was and what was causing the restriction. This meant we could target the blockage properly and avoid unnecessary digging or disruption.

Only pee, poo and toilet paper should be flushed, with items such as wipes, sanitary products, nappies and cotton pads placed in the bin instead. They also advise against putting fat, oil and grease down sinks, as these can contribute to blockages within drains and sewers.

High-Pressure Water Jetting to Clear the Drain

Once the blockage had been located, high-pressure water jets were used to break it down and clear the pipework.

This allowed us to remove the limescale build-up and debris from the drainage system, restoring flow through the drain. High-pressure water jetting is ideal for stubborn drain blockages because it clears the obstruction while also helping to clean the inside of the pipe.

Flow Restored to the Drainage System

After the blockage was cleared, the system was checked again to make sure water was flowing correctly.

The inspection chamber was left clear, and the drainage system was working as it should again. This gave the customer peace of mind that the immediate blockage had been resolved and the drain was no longer backing up.

Why Limescale Can Cause Drain Blockages

Limescale can gradually build up inside pipework, especially in areas with hard water. Over time, this can narrow the internal diameter of the drain and make it easier for other waste, debris and non-flushable items to catch inside the pipe.

When materials such as wipes, grease or other waste enter the drainage system, they can combine with existing scale and create a stubborn blockage that needs specialist equipment to remove.
