NOW Drainage was called out to a property in Salisbury after a blocked drainage system caused sewage to overflow externally.
This was an urgent drainage issue that needed locating, clearing and cleaning down properly. Using CCTV drain survey equipment, we identified the blockage, cleared it with high-pressure water jetting and restored flow to the drainage system.
The Problem – Sewage Overflow from a Blocked Drain
When we arrived on site, the drainage system was blocked and waste water had started to overflow around the external drain area.
Signs of a blocked drain can include slow-draining water, bad smells, gurgling noises, water backing up and sewage returning or overflowing. Wessex Water also advises that if a blockage is on private pipework, it is the homeowner’s responsibility to arrange clearance.
Locating the Blockage with CCTV Drain Survey Equipment
Rather than guessing where the blockage was, we used our CCTV drain camera to inspect the system internally.
The CCTV survey allowed us to trace the line, locate the obstruction and confirm where the problem was within the drainage system. This helps avoid unnecessary digging and makes the clearance process much more accurate.
High-Pressure Water Jetting Used to Clear the Blockage
Once the blockage had been located, our team used high-pressure water jetting to clear the pipework.
Water jetting is a highly effective method for clearing stubborn drain blockages because it breaks down the obstruction and flushes the waste through the system, restoring proper flow.
Area Cleaned Down After the Overflow
After the blockage was cleared and the drain was flowing again, the affected area was cleaned down.
This is especially important when sewage has overflowed externally, as it helps leave the property safer, cleaner and more presentable once the drainage issue has been resolved.
Common Causes of Blocked Drains
Blocked drains can be caused by a number of issues, including wet wipes, sanitary products, fats, oils, grease, food waste, scale, silt, leaves and root ingress.
Only flushing the three Ps: pee, poo and toilet paper. Wet wipes and other non-flushable items are a major cause of blockages because they do not break down like toilet paper.
Why Fast Drain Clearance Matters
A blocked drainage system can quickly become more than an inconvenience, especially when sewage starts to overflow.
Fast attendance helps reduce mess, prevent further backing up and identify whether the blockage is a one-off obstruction or a sign of a deeper issue within the drainage system.
Approved Document H covers foul water drainage, underground drainage, pipework protection, manholes and inspection chambers, which highlights why proper access and inspection points are important when dealing with drainage systems.
